Venice lives by its canals, workshops, markets and the ships moving through the lagoon. Salt keeps food and trade moving, but the plague makes ordinary errands uncertain, and people watch strangers closely. They fear infection, fire, drowning and debt—and a damaged reputation can close more doors than an empty purse.
